Bulls Game No. 47: The good, the bad and the ugly from a wild win in Oakland
Coming into Tuesday night’s game, the Golden State Warriors were 21-1 at home inside Oracle Arena and were riding a 19-game win streak inside “Roaracle”. It took an extra five minutes, but the Chicago Bulls ended the Warriors’ streak, thanks in part to a befuddling performance from their superstar point guard.
The list of players to score 30+ points, commit 10+ turnovers and dish out one assist in an NBA game is short. The list only includes a single name: Derrick Rose.

Despite a career-high 11 turnovers and missing 20 of his 33 shot attempts on Tuesday night, Rose drilled the game-winning jumper over potential Western Conference All-Star starter Klay Thompson with seven seconds left to give the Bulls a wild and wacky 113-111 victory over Golden State.
"“That’s the same shot I would take if I was at the UC, anywhere; a step-back jump shot. I’m comfortable with that shot. He jumped, but I was able to get a little bit over him.”-Derrick Rose on his game-winner, CSNChicago.com"
Rose had plenty of good, but plenty of bad (and ugly) in Tuesday’s thrilling win.
Here’s a look at the good, the bad and the ugly for the Bulls against the Western Conference’s best squad:
“The Good”: Derrick Rose did what only Derrick Rose could
Playing in almost 43(!) minutes on Tuesday night, Rose was sensational early on in the ballgame. Even throughout the game where he pressed the issue more than he should have, Rose was able to lock down this season’s MVP front-runner, Stephen Curry, throughout the entire game.
Curry was held to just 9-for-23 shooting for 21 points and shot 2-for-9 from long range in just under 43 minutes of action.
Despite the struggles, Rose made the two biggest plays of the game when the Bulls needed them.
First, with the Bulls trailing 105-104 with 18.9 seconds left, Rose stole Curry’s pass, penetrated and kicked to Kirk Hinrich on the right wing, who drained a colossal three-pointer with 15.8 seconds left.
Then, with 08.4 seconds left in overtime, Derrick Rose pulled one last trick out of the bag. Rose drained a long jumper over Klay Thompson to give the Bulls a 113-111 lead.
The statement still remains, “Big-time players make big-time plays.”
“The Bad”: The injury bug continues to bite the Bulls
With Mike Dunleavy still sidelined by an ankle injury and Jimmy Butler out on Tuesday due to an illness, Taj Gibson tweaked his right knee in the second quarter. Gibson tried to return in the third quarter for a span, but sat out all of the fourth quarter and overtime periods.
The knee issue doesn’t appear to be too severe for Gibson, as no reports have mentioned Gibson missing any time as of yet. Kirk Hinrich also had a right leg issue in Tuesday’s win, but the issue was just cramps. Hinrich played over 38 minutes in the absence of Dunleavy and Butler.
“The Ugly”: You can’t overlook 11 turnovers
As clutch as Rose was in key situations on Tuesday, would the Bulls have really needed Rose’s MVP-like playmaking if he would’ve played with a little more control?
The pace of Tuesday’s game was sensational and played into Golden State’s hands. But, even inside the NBA’s loudest arena, while playing arguably the best team in the league, Rose refused to slow the pace down at times when he probably should have.
To put Rose’s up-and-down night in perspective: The Warriors had 13 turnovers as a team.
As a TEAM.
As good as Rose was on Tuesday, his play at times was just ugly.
(One final note: How does a “superstar point guard” shoot 11 shot attempts and not take a single free throw? Tuesday was wacky … and that’s just a simple description.)
Next up for the Bulls (30-17): At Los Angeles (Lakers), 9:30 PM CT, TNT doubleheader.
