Even if they sign free agent QB Mike Glennon, the Chicago Bears may still draft a quarterback early in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The Chicago Bears have been heavily connected to free agent quarterback Mike Glennon the past few days. At this point, it would almost be a surprise if he does not end up in Chicago. I have let my displeasure known about this possible move. However, there may be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Glennon is being rumored to be getting a contract worth $14-$15 million. If the Bears make that commitment, he is their long-term starter, taking them out of the market for a quarterback early in the 2017 NFL Draft, right? Not so fast.

Speaking on NFL Total Access, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport painted a different picture.

"“(Glennon) would also not stop the Bears from drafting a quarterback high. He would be the ultimate bridge starter for the Chicago Bears, someone to essentially keep them afloat and maybe keep the seat warm for whoever they draft in the first or second round this coming year.”"

This is an interesting way to look at this. Glennon is not a high-level NFL starter. We know this, but if he is just the bridge guy, I do not hate it so much. I do not know if he is really a better option than Jay Cutler, but it is probably healthier for the organization to start fresh with Glennon under center than having Cutler around trying to groom a rookie. That would just be a disaster.

If the Bears snag Deshaun Watson, Mitchell Trubisky or DeShone Kizer (I much prefer the former two as opposed to the latter) with the third overall pick, signing Glennon would take the pressure off of the rookie signal caller.

I am still not a huge fan of the Bears going to Glennon route. I see no reason why Brian Hoyer cannot be that bridge quarterback. However, if signing him is coupled with drafting Watson or Trubisky in the 2017 NFL Draft, it is a move I can stomach.

Mike Glennon as a bridge quarterback for the Chicago Bears may not be so bad. A double-dip at the quarterback position if you will.
