National Media misinterprets Derrick Rose comments

Derrick Rose made some comments about the 2017 free agency period at Chicago Bulls media day, and yet again, the national media misinterpreted the guards comments and made him out to be someone he is not.

Derrick Rose was in the spotlight at Chicago Bulls media day, and again it was for the wrong reasons. The majority of questions directed towards Rose were about the accused lawsuit he is dealing with, but it was the comments he made about his 2017 free agency that caught the attention of everyone.

Rose was asked about his summer training and what was motivating him for his workouts. “This whole summer I had tunnel vision. My mindset was just making sure that I was working out every day, and spending as much time as possible with my son and focusing on those two things. Making sure my family is financially stable, as far as seeing all the money that they’re passing out in this league. Just telling the truth. Just knowing that my day will be coming up soon, and it’s not for me. It’s for P.J. and his future, so that’s what I’m thinking about now.’’

Rose went on to say, “But when you talk about that much money the only thing you can do is prepare for it. I’m trying to prepare, not only myself, but my family. And I’m doing this all for my son.”

Not once did Rose say he was looking to leave Chicago. He was talking about the new NBA TV money deal which is allowing players to get insanely high contracts. Rose was simply saying that he’s looking forward to proving to the Bulls and the entire NBA that he’s still a max contract player, and is excited to get paid as a result.

  • Anyone who knows the real Rose, the kid from Chicago, knows that Derrick is just being himself here, and being honest. After the last 3 years of suffering through injuries, he finally had a summer without dealing with an injury, and was able to work on his game and improve as a player.

Since winning MVP, he has watched others players steal the spotlight from him and get some nice pay raises. Rose is in good spirits right now mentally and spiritually and that is a good sign for the upcoming season. He is ready to prove to everyone that he’s worthy of another max deal.

The national media, of course, took his comments the wrong way and used his words as advertisement. Soon after Rose made the comments about thinking about free agency, social media and sports writers immediately did their worst impressions, and misinterpreted Rose’s comments.

The main headline on every sports media outlet was: Derrick Rose already thinking about 2017 free agency. And immediately he started to get bashed by fans everywhere, and even some Bulls fans were angry as well.

It’s obvious that any headline with Derrick Rose and a negative component attached with it will get clicks all over the internet, as Rose’s reputation has taken a hit with injuries and controversial comments that have taken place. There are some people out there, mostly fans of the NBA, who want to see Rose fail now, and that is unfortunate.

There have been countless memes around the internet of people make fun of Rose for getting hurt and that is immature. Injuries are out of an athletes control and are just part of sports. Thankfully for Bulls fans, Rose is a mature adult and athlete, and uses all the hate as motivation.

His honest comments about trying to keep his son and family financially stable for the future are being viewed as selfish and weak. But he’s just being honest and you can’t blame him for doing so. Coming from the dangerous and poor neighborhood he grew up in Chicago, he’s happy that his life has changed for the good, and is excited to cash in on the new NBA contracts.

Through his play on the court for the Bulls, Rose is saying that he will earn one of those big contracts that are being passed out and prove to the NBA, and more importantly to the Bulls front office that he is still one of the elite players in the game and deserves to be paid as such.

Rose didn’t play like a max contract player last year but had a strong playoff run and started to look like his old self. Everything is set up for Rose to succeed this season. A healthy productive summer gave him the opportunity to play basketball and improve on his overall game. That was crucial for him to get his routine and confidence back.

New coach Fred Hoiberg‘s offense suits Rose’s game perfectly in that it is predicated on pushing the ball at a fast pace, a trait that Rose is elite at. Hoiberg has already stated that Rose is elite when he is going downhill and is figured to have Rose push the ball instead of walking it up the floor this season.

The national media needs to get off the bashing of Derrick Rose bandwagon, and start being insightful in their published pieces. Nothing that Rose said was wrong for a person in his position, and that is why you haven’t heard any of his teammates or coaching staff question his comments. For the Bulls fans who are bashing him for his comments, take a chill pill and relax. Derrick doesn’t want to play for any other team and is focused on bringing a championship to his hometown.

The two years Rose has left on his contract are crucial to his future. If Rose can deliver a title within the next two years, he will get that well deserved pay-day he is talking about, and all of Chicago will rest in peace.
