The Chicago White Sox currently sit at 3.5 games out of first place in the division, and they have a small hold on second place. Munetaka Murakami has been an essential weapon in the White Sox arsenal, and he's been a heavy contributor the the White Sox climbing over .500.

Tuesday night saw Murakami smash his 20th home run in the MLB as he battles for most home runs in the league with Philadelphia's Kyle Schwarber. At present, Schwarber holds the edge with one additional home run over Murakami, but the two sluggers have been exchanging the title all season.

Munetaka Murakami has become essential to the White Sox staying competitive

The fact that Murakami has reached 20+ home runs before June continues one of the most productive starts to the season, especially when it comes to rookies. The White Sox have consistently leaned on his power, and for good reason.

It's not every day you see a rookie adjusting to the MLB this quickly, nor this effectively. Murakami hasn't looked overwhelmed one bit, and he's been aces under pressure. The immediate success the White Sox are seeing is no small thing, and it makes perfect sense why the fan base is already calling for him to be extended.

The White Sox remain within striking distance of the division through the first two months of the season. This is quite a step above the expectations everyone had coming into this season. Manager Will Venable has repeatedly stated that the goal of the season was to develop the core of the team. Hunting for the division is just a bonus.

The home run race with Schwarber is giving the White Sox a national spotlight when they weren't expecting it. But to the surprise of many, the south siders have risen up and found themselves equal to the occasion. Murakami continuing to battle it out with the best of the best hitters changes the ceiling of the White Sox.

The White Sox have been looking for a true centerpiece for the franchise and it may be painfully obvious who the team has gravitated towards. While the White Sox continue to chase the Guardians for the division, every home run from Murakami feels bigger and bigger. If the White Sox stay in the division race this summer, Murakami’s bat will be one of the biggest reasons why.
