The offseason frenzy is largely over. Teams, including the Chicago Bulls, have made the vast majority of their moves. There are very few free agents remaining on the market, and even less cap space around the league. So, one shouldn't expect a blockbuster move from the Bulls or elsewhere in the NBA.
However, that doesn't mean that the Bulls are closed for business. They still have an open roster spot and have the means to fill it. Chicago still has the room mid-level exception, which means that they can sign a player making up to $9.36 million next season.
How the Bulls should fill this open roster spot is also obvious. As things stand now, a big weakness on the roster is shooting. Norman Powell's addition will certainly help on that front, but the Bulls lack elite shooters. Using the final roster spot on another dangerous weapon from outside would do wonders for this young Bulls team.
Bulls should look to sign a shooter to their final roster spot
Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis are improved shooters. Caleb Wilson looks like he could be a solid shooter if he can keep up what he has been doing in the Summer League.
The bench, however, leaves plenty to be desired in terms of shooting. Tre Jones, Dailyn Swain, Patrick Williams, and Isaac Okoro are well below average shooters for their positions. Jalen Smith and Zach Collins can stretch the floor, but they are by no means elite shooters.
Given that the Bulls have a non-shooting center in Nic Claxton and multiple non-shooters coming off the bench, it would be wise to invest in a sharpshooter as a deep bench option.
The problem is, the options on the free agent market are less than ideal. It's either veteran shooters like Seth Curry who are past their prime or unproven younger options like Jett Howard. While these could be worthy fliers, exploring the trade market might make more sense.
The Bulls can absorb a player into their room MLE without giving up any players to match salaries. Shooters like Julian Strawther, Gradey Dick, or Dalton Knecht could be acquired without giving up anything of value. Someone like Ty Jerome, who isn't necessarily a shooter archetype but can certainly shoot the ball and do much more with the ball, could also be a fascinating trade target.
This would require the new front office to get creative. They have done a solid job building out this roster so far, and this final move could be a great way to round out this team before the 2026-27 campaign.
