The backup quarterback situation with the Chicago Bears has been a topic of discussion since free agency began. The veteran incumbent, Tyson Bagent, currently holds that spot, but with the team re-signing 38-year-old Case Keenum to a two-year, $5.5 million deal on March 9, it is fair to question if Bagent will be back in the Windy City at all.
On Monday, another layer was added to those trade rumors. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the New England Patriots "are planning to release backup QB Josh Dobbs, sources say, after being unable to find a trade partner."
With Dobbs slated to become a free agent, it would not be a surprise if the Bears give him some consideration even though they just signed Bagent to a two-year, $10 million extension last summer.
Joshua Dobbs News Only Adds to Tyson Bagent Trade Rumors
Obviously, the Bears seem to have Keenum locked up in light of the recent extension, but that does not mean Bagent is safe with the news that Dobbs will be available. After all, the veteran Dobbs has proved to be a reliable backup QB in the league and someone who has some experience filling in as the starter.
While Dobbs has been a journeyman QB and has played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, and Patriots, he has made 15 total starts. His record is only 3-12 in those games, but he has accumulated 3,346 passing yards, 17 TDs, and 15 interceptions to go along with 515 rush yards and eight rush TDs.
As someone who sat behind MVP runner-up Drake Maye with the Patriots last season, Dobbs only made four appearances and completed seven of his 10 passes for 65 yards. He is also someone who can use his legs effectively, running for 515 yards and eight TDs during his career, which could be a valuable asset to have on the depth chart.
Bagent's rookie season in 2023 is really the best glimpse of his potential that fans have had. During that campaign, he was 94-of-143 (65.7 percent) for 859 yards with three TDs and six interceptions, all while starting four games and appearing in five. With only five completions since his rookie season, the Bears may have even more reason to trade Bagent before free agency ends.
Keenum has transitioned to more of a mentor role in recent seasons and has thrown four TD passes and four interceptions over the last four seasons he has played, so it would be understandable if Chicago wants to bring Dobbs in and add another veteran to its roster.
Ideally, starting QB Caleb Williams will be in there for every game, and the depth will not have to be tested. If the Bears want another experienced veteran who is familiar with the backup role, though, Dobbs could fit right in.
