Former Chicago Bears third-round pick Velus Jones Jr. has had a rollercoaster 2025 season. The former Bears bust started the year with the New Orleans Saints but finished it with the Seattle Seahawks, where he won a Super Bowl title.
Many Bears fans probably didn’t think that Jones would be on a contender, let alone be part of a Super Bowl-winning team in 2025, after Chicago parted ways with him during the 2024 season.Â
However, Jones kept at it, finding his way to Seattle in late October, where he would bounce up and down from their practice squad for multiple weeks. But that perseverance paid off, as he played in three regular-season games and two playoff games, including the Super Bowl.Â
The Seahawks rewarded Jones and several other players for their efforts, signing them to future/reserve deals on Thursday. For those unfamiliar with future/reserve deals, they allow teams to bring back practice squad players and add them to the 90-man roster to compete for a roster spot for next season.
Velus Jones' Luck Continues with Latest Post-Bears WinÂ
The former Bears running back/wide receiver didn’t do much in his regular-season snaps with the Seahawks. However, Jones showed up on the biggest stage in Super Bowl 60, with two great special teams plays, putting the New England Patriots’ offense behind the 8-ball.
During the second quarter of Super Bowl 60, Jones downed a punt on the two-yard line, which made life tough for the Patriots, who ultimately had to punt themselves.
Then, in the fourth quarter, Jones once again showed off his special teams prowess, downing a 55-yard punt at the Pats’ four-yard line. New England’s offense again could not do anything as they were backed up in their own territory.
You've got to give Jones credit for taking advantage of the opportunity he got in the Super Bowl. Granted, it wasn’t playing offense, which he’s done throughout the early part of his NFL career, but he still managed to make positive contributions, no matter how surprising that was for the Windy City as a whole.
However, it didn’t matter as the ex-Bear showed he was a team player and would do whatever it takes to win. That reflects well on him, as Jones will try to make the team out of preseason next season.
Despite his play in 2025, Jones will have a tough time making the Seahawks’ 53-man roster, as they’re quite loaded at running back. If Kenneth Walker III returns in free agency, the Seahawks will hope to have him, Zach Charbonnet, George Holani, and Kenny McIntosh.
Then there are Cam Akers and Jacardia Wright, who were both signed to future deals on Thursday. Many teams carry at most 3-4 running backs on their 53-man roster. The odds will be stacked against Jones, but his willingness to play special teams gives him a fighting chance in the competition.
