The majority of 2025 has been a rollercoaster ride for ex-Chicago Bears wideout-turned-running back Velus Jones Jr. The former 2022 third-rounder joined the New Orleans Saints once free agency began, only to be waived twice by the franchise in October.

He was given a new lease on life by signing with the Seattle Seahawks' practice squad earlier this week, but it seems that stint wasn't meant to be, either.

On Thursday, ESPN's Brady Henderson reported that the Seahawks have released Jones from the practice squad, replacing the ex-Bear with veteran RB Myles Gaskin. It's safe to say it wasn't the run in the Windy City that the 28-year-old vet envisioned when he put pen to paper, leaving time to tell how much more turmoil his career can take.

Ex-Bear Velus Jones' Career Is Nearing a Crossroads

Jones' career is officially in limbo again, and it remains to be seen if anyone is willing to roll the dice on him. He's no longer a young player who can capitalize on his history as a former Day 2 selection. His 30th birthday is coming up in just over two years, and it won't be long until his physical performance noticeably declines, which will limit the interest a potential suitor may have.

It doesn't help that Jones has now spent time with five franchises since the start of the 2024 calendar, playing only eight games during that stretch. His inability to stick around across the board is a big enough sample size to indicate that he might be the problem, rather than those destinations being bad fits. The fact that the Seahawks only needed a day or so to change their mind on him highlights that fact.

Furthermore, the fact that Jones is more of a special teamer these days will likely limit the number of opportunities he sees in the future.

He's only played nine offensive snaps since the beginning of the 2024 season, including two in five games with the Saints. He averaged 22.9 yards on eight return attempts, but his inability to do much outside of special teams left no reason to keep him around. Any other team that gives Jones a chance will likely reach a similar conclusion.

It will be interesting to see if another team is willing to give Jones an opportunity. Injuries to WRs and RBs will only pop up more frequently as the season progresses, meaning a general manager might be desperate enough to sign the ex-Bear — especially if options are slim after Tuesday's trade deadline.

If that happens, Jones had better make the most of that chance. Otherwise, the 2025 season could be his last in the NFL.
