This is an important season for Tyrique Stevenson as he has a potential contract on the line. While the cornerback enters his fourth year and last of his rookie deal, defensive coordinator Dennis Allen had a good summation of why it is hard to judge Stevenson and his potential to get a contract. For as good as he looks on one snap, he struggles the next.

"I can make you a tape of Tyrique from last season where you would look at it and say, woo, that's pretty good. It is the lapses in consistency."
Allen added he can be a "starting caliber corner."

As Allen notes, he is a starting-caliber cornerback and has shown that throughout his career. He hit the ground running as a rookie and started in 16 games. The arrow was pointing up in a big way after his rookie season. However, while he remained the starter for most of 2024, he was a part of the infamous Hail Mary by Jayden Daniels.Â
By the end of the season, the team was platooning him with Terell Smith, who was drafted multiple rounds after him. The team also changed coaching staffs before his third season, and Stevenson was not fully healthy. However, as Allen noted, in moments he looked like one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. In other moments, he looked like he needed to be benched.
That inconsistency has followed him throughout his career. The talent has never really been questioned, but the Bears need to see that level of play on a much more consistent basis before committing to him long term.
Now, he enters a pivotal fourth season, and things already appear to be up-and-down. Stevenson has looked good in moments, but one of the most notable big plays of training camp was Kaliff Raymond burning Stevenson.Â
It is good to see from Raymond because he is competing for the third receiver spot. However, he is not quite the caliber of player that should be making the highlight catches over you in training camp.Â
So, things are already projecting to Stevenson playing out the season on his contract and not being offered a new contract by the Bears. There will be teams that see his draft pedigree and the number of starts in his first four years and decide to give him a chance after this year. However, it is hard to see the Bears being the team to buy into the potential unless he shows a lot more consistency in 2026.
