The Chicago Bears drafted Caleb Williams with the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While the team has been completely satisfied with the pick, it appears every year there is a new debate about whether the team should have gone in another direction. A re-draft of the 2024 draft done by Zacharty Pereles of CBS Sports dives into the debate once again.Â
Would the Chicago Bears draft Caleb Williams in a re-draft?
Pereles went with Drake Maye as the number one pick in the re-draft. This is not the most controversial opinion. Maye was an MVP candidate last year and played in the Super Bowl. However, it does speak to some of the inability to see past the most recent thing when doing these re-drafts.Â
After the 2024 season, the player on top of all of the re-drafts was Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders. Daniels was the MVP candidate and the Rookie of the Year who led his team into the playoffs. He won a huge playoff game against the Detroit Lions to propel his team into the NFC Championship game as well.Â
However, Daniels was not the same in 2025. After being deemed the best in the class, he has now become the consensus third best.Â
Williams was in a bad spot as a rookie, and most forgave him. He was the consensus second pick, ahead of Maye, who flashed even less during his rookie season.Â
Williams progressed in year two. While he did not have quite the rise as Maye, he did win a playoff game as well. Considering he was taken ahead of Maye and was ahead of Maye after their rookie years, there could be some room to assume that he will continue to grow and could continue to be ranked ahead of Maye.Â
However, a lot of that debate goes into the quick decision-making of what you saw last. Daniels had the best year in 2024, so the Bears should have taken him. Maye had the best year in 2025, so the Bears should have taken him. If Williams has the best year in 2026, those picks would look bad in retrospect.Â
While the other two jump between one and three, Williams has steadily been viewed as the second. He has been steadier, which means fewer downs. This could lead to him being the best over the long term, which is what the team was considering when drafting him.Â
