We've reached mid-July, and the Bears are still lacking in the edge-rush department. Due to this, the Bears have been linked to every player that's ever rushed a quarterback, but this time, one actually makes sense. Tyler Dragon of USA Today recently linked the Bears to Jadeveon Clowney, the former Dallas Cowboy who still remains a free agent.
Clowney is 33 years old, and since his departure from the Texans back in 2020, he's signed a series of one or two year deals, most recently with Dallas. He's had stops on defenses all over the NFL, and he's never quite lived up to his first overall status. But what can you expect out of a 33 year old edge rusher?
Another reliable name on the outside
This isn't the worst idea in the world for Chicago. Though the team seems intent on the room they have on defense, many fans and pundits remain unconvinced that they need to improve their roster if they wish to improve on their dismal rankings in 2025. Clowney could proved to be an inexpensive addition to the roster that could make all of the difference in the world to Dennis Allen's defense.
Not only would Clowney bring an expanse of veteran experience to the room for the younger players, he would likely come to play at a discounted rate. Spotrac.com currently lists him at $5.7 million for market value, but given that his last contract was for $3.4 million, and he remains a free agent in July, he's likely just looking for a home.
That's why it's worth the Bears moving some funds around to find a roster spot for Clowney. If he doesn't work out, and they end up going in a different direction, they haven't wasted their time. But proceeding with the same names that are currently on the roster remains worrisome.
This isn't to say that the Bears roster isn't already a talented set. 2025 was marred by several key injuries, but that's all the more reason to sign Clowney in support. An ideal situation would see Clowney serving in an advisory and support role rather than a full time starter. But should an injury or some other setback happen, he'd be ready to step in and serve.
Clowney isn't the game-changing superstar he was once projected to become, but that's no longer what the Bears would be paying for. At the right price, adding a proven veteran to a position full of uncertainty feels like an opportunity Chicago shouldn't ignore.
