There were plenty of warning signs when the Chicago Bears made Shane Waldron their offensive coordinator last year. After leaving the Seattle Seahawks, Waldron was set to work with Caleb Williams and help him acclimate to life in the NFL. That relationship never materialized, and Waldron didn’t last a full season before he was fired in November.
While Williams’s career is far from over, it didn’t help having an overmatched offensive coordinator as his main confidant, and somehow an NFL team noticed as they hired Waldron to ruin another talented quarterback in 2025.
Jaguars Hire Shane Waldron To Potentially Ruin Trevor Lawrence in 2025
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Waldron, who is expected to be a passing-game coordinator next season. Waldron has a previous relationship with new head coach Liam Coen from their time with the Los Angeles Rams but the hiring seems to ignore recent history as Waldron’s career has gone downhill.

Waldron was hired by the Seahawks as their offensive coordinator in 2021 and spent three underwhelming seasons under Pete Carroll. During his time in Seattle, Waldron’s offense ranked over 15th in scoring offense and 20th in total offense once and his passing offense ranked 23rd, 11th and 14th respectively before he was fired after the 2023 season.
The Bears scooped up Waldron to work with Williams but a Super Bowl interview with Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba went viral as a bad omen. Chicago ranked 13th in passing attempts with Waldron in charge, but he ranked 31st in passing offense and 25th in passing touchdowns before his dismissal midway through last season.
Waldron will work with another former No. 1 overall pick in Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville as he looks to justify the five-year, $275 million extension he signed last summer. While former Vikings assistant QB coach Grant Udinski was hired as Jacksonville’s offensive coordinator on Wednesday, having Waldron anywhere near the quarterback seems like a bad idea.
The Bears paid for it figuratively with a lost season and literally with the hiring of new head coach Ben Johnson. If Lawrence falters with the Jaguars, they could wind up paying the same cost.
