It's a rainy day in Chicago, and the Bears announced that their practice would no longer be open to the public due to lightning. It's understandable that the team would wish to close the doors to the public today, but it's also understandable that the organization wouldn't want to waste a day of practice and to get the reps in when they could.
That's why Richard Hightower was excited to practice today. Inclement weather is a part of football no matter how you look at it. Playing the game in cold and windy or snowy weather is something that all teams need to deal with at least a couple times per season, and it's definitely worth it to be prepared. Finding out in Training Camp who can handle the weather is a must.
Richard Hightower sees opportunity in miserable conditions
"Embrace the opportunity to go out in the wet and rainy weather. You know, we got wet ball Wednesday on a Saturday, so we're fired up about that because, you know why? Because we get to work ball security. The returners get to work that. We get to see if the snappers can snap the ball in this type of weather. We get to see if we can kick in it. And we get to see, you know, who is ready to rock and roll no matter what the elements are. Because as you know, we playing Soldier, and everything's unpredictable. So, I'm excited to see who's gonna respond today."Richard Hightower
As Hightower mentioned, for now, the Bears play their home games at Soldier Field. Due to it's location on the edge of Lake Michigan, the weather in the stadium can be unpredictable, and sometimes, outright dangerous with cold. For that to be the home of the Bears, the team needs to be at a higher level of preparation than other teams, especially when hosting a team from another city with horrible weather.
Though the NFL is gradually moving away from elemental factors, the Bears will be at Soldier Field for at least a couple more seasons. Until then, it's necessary for the team to take specific bad-weather reps. They can try to simulate weather like that all they want, but frankly there's nothing compared to the real thing. Hightower may not be able to control the weather, but he can make sure his highly important aspect of the team is as prepared as can possibly be.
