Chicago Cubs infield prospect Luis Vazquez has gotten off to a tremendous start in Triple-A this season, slashing .262/.360/.397 with three home runs and 11 RBI. The Cubs have taken notice of the 24-year-old’s play in the minor leagues this season and have decided to bring him up to the big leagues.

However, Cubs fans didn’t hear the announcement from the team about Vazquez’s promotion, instead, it was from his mom.

On Sunday evening, ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reported that Vazquez’s mom told him that the Cubs are calling up her son to the majors.

This promotion is even more special because Castillo is reportedly cousins with Vazquez. The 24-year-old infielder could take the spot of second baseman Nico Hoerner, who has been out since last Monday due to a hamstring injury. Chicago has yet to put Hoerner on the injured list so they may ultimately do that to free up a roster spot for Vazquez.

Vazquez has been in the Cubs’ organization since 2017 as a 17-year-old after being drafted in the 14th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft.

The Orcovis, Puerto Rico native started the 2024 season with Triple-A Iowa after spending last season in Triple-A and Double-A Tennessee. Between those two levels in 2023, Vazquez hit 20 home runs and drove in 80 RBI with a .271 batting average.

Nonetheless, it seems like Vazquez’s success he had at the plate in 2023 has carried into 2024, which is a good sign for him and the Cubs. With the MLB season being a 162-game marathon, there will always be injuries at the big league level and you must have the proper resources in the minors to help out when necessary.
