With the 2024 WNBA regular season set to tip-off on Tuesday night, all 12 teams around the league have begun cutting down their rosters to 12 players over the last few days.

The Chicago Sky wrapped up their preseason slate last week, defeating the New York Liberty 101-53. After their final preseason game, the Sky began making cuts to their gameday roster, releasing Taya Reimer on Friday.

On Monday, the Sky announced that they waived Brynna Maxwell, who was selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. With Maxwell not making the final roster for the 2024 season, Chennedy Carter and Kysre Gondrezick have made the team.

Carter and Maxwell were two of the three players who we highlighted after the draft that were on thin ice. In regards to Maxwell, it was going to be an uphill battle for her to make the Sky’s roster as a second-round pick.

For many years, we’ve seen how hard it is for draft picks to make the gameday roster when you have limited spots (12 players).

The former Gonzaga standout only played six minutes in the Sky’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Lynx. Maxwell had two points, one rebound, and one assist. The second-round pick didn’t play again in the preseason as she reportedly suffered a knee injury in training camp, sidelining her for four weeks.

Maxwell would’ve been a tremendous addition to the Sky’s offense as she was a good shooter in college. Last season at Gonzaga, Maxwell averaged 14.2 points per game on 46.2 percent shooting from the field and 49.6 percent from deep. For her collegiate career, she shot 42.7 percent from beyond the arc.

With the Sky’s opening night roster finalized, the team will prepare for their 2024 regular season opener against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday night.
