Re-Grading Every Cubs First Round Pick Under Jed Hoyer

An A+ in 2013? An F in 2017? Hindsight is 20/20, but the Cubs can learn a thing or two from it.

2023: SS Matt Shaw, 13th Overall

Grade: A

Cubs No. 2 and MLB No. 30 prospect Shaw has been on a heater since he transitioned to minor league ball from the NCAA. Over three leagues in 2023, he hit a scorching .357 with eight home runs and a 1.018 OPS. Shaw's impressive performances earned him an invite to Spring Training this year, where he turned even more heads.

This season in AA, he's continued his fine form, picking up Minor League Player of the Week honors for June 17-23 where he hit .428 with four home runs and nine RBI.

Shaw may not be MLB-ready quite yet but he's waiting in the wings as a genuine game-changer at third base, a position where the Cubs have been sorely lacking since Kris Bryant's departure.
