Re-Grading Every Cubs First Round Pick Under Jed Hoyer

An A+ in 2013? An F in 2017? Hindsight is 20/20, but the Cubs can learn a thing or two from it.

2021: P Jordan Wicks, 21st Overall

Grade: B-

Wicks is an interesting case. He stormed out to a great start when he struck out nine in his debut late last season, but his ERA has remained over 4 since. His potential is certainly there, but the Cubs haven't figured out whether to use him in the starting rotation or relief. The multiple trips to the IL this season haven't helped his development either. If Wicks can come back and stay healthy with consistent outings, the Cubs are certain to have a solid pitcher on their roster.

2022: P Cade Horton, 7th Overall

Grade: A-

Cubs No. 1 and MLB No. 17 overall prospect Horton is highly anticipated to make his debut later this season - and the Cubs need his arm.

The Oklahoma product pitched 88.1 innings across three different levels in his first minor league season last year, posting a sparkling 2.65 ERA. This season, he posted a 1.10 ERA in AA but has struggled upon promotion to AAA. Horton went to the IL with a lat strain last month after five starts in AAA but is expected to return soon.
