Proposed Bears Trade is Perfect Move to Win the NFC North
The Chicago Bears were one of the most active and improved teams throughout the offseason. They were able to completely reshape the roster, trading away Justin Fields and replacing him with Caleb Williams.
They also traded for Keenan Allen then added D'Andre Swift, Gerald Everett, and Kevin Byard in free agency. We can't forget that they drafted WR Rome Odunze with the ninth overall pick.
Additionally, the Bears and Jaylon Johnson agreed to terms on a four-year, $76 million extension.
GM Ryan Poles did an exceptional job of upgrading the roster and they should be significantly better.
Matt Holder of Bleacher Report released a piece highlighting six post-June 1 moves that teams should make ahead of training camp.
His proposed trade would help the Bears compete for the NFC North title.
Holder suggests that the Bears should trade for New England Patriots EDGE Matthew Judon. The Patriots are rebuilding so they could be looking to add future assets.
If the Pats moved on from Judon after June 1, they would save about $6.7 million in cap relief. Judon is playing in the final year of his four-year, $54 million deal that he signed in 2021. His cap number for this upcoming season is $14.6 million but that wouldn't be a problem for the Bears. They currently have $22.6 million available in salary cap space.
The Bears need more juice off the edge, after they finished 31st in the NFL in team sacks (30) in 2023. They traded for Montez Sweat last October, and he was their best rusher immediately. He totaled six sacks in nine games with the Bears, which ranked first on the team.
Regardless, they need more firepower and the 32-year-old Judon would be the perfect addition. In his eight-year career, Judon has registered 369 total tackles, 87 tackles for loss, and 66.5 sacks. The combination of Judon and Sweat coming off the edge would strike fear in opposing quarterbacks and give the Bears a real shot of coming for the NFC North crown.
According to FanDuel Sportsbook, the Detroit Lions are favored to win the NFC North at +145, while, the Bears are currently third at +320.
The acquisition of Judon could potentially shift those odds in favor of the Bears.
