NFC Rival Works Out Failed Bears Draft Pick Ahead of Week 1
By Jovan Alford
With Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season set to kick off this week, many teams across the league are hosting workouts for various free agents, who could be potential additions to their 53-man roster or practice squad.
The New Orleans Saints are one of the teams that hosted a wide-ranging workout on Monday, which featured a couple of former Chicago Bears punters.
According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the Saints worked out Trenton Gill and Corliss Waitman. Waitman was with the Bears for training camp after he was signed to a reserve/futures contract by the team at the end of the 2023 season.
As for Gill, he was drafted by the Bears in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Gill spent two seasons in the Windy City before getting waived in May. After getting cut by Chicago, the former seventh-round pick was signed by the Denver Broncos two weeks later.
However, the former Bears punter could not win the starting job in Denver over Riley Dixon. Last season with the Bears, Gill averaged 46.1 yards per punt, recorded eight touchbacks, and put 18 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line.
While those are pretty solid numbers, the Bears thought otherwise as they used a fourth-round pick on Iowa standout Tory Taylor, who was one of the best punters in college football last year.
Nonetheless, Gill will continue to get workouts from various teams in the league as he hopes to land on the practice squad.
