New Caleb Williams Backup Now Available for Bears
The Chicago Bears have taken major swings this offseason to improve this roster. GM Ryan Poles made a combination of moves in both free agency and the NFL Draft to raise the floor of this team.
It's a new era in the Windy City as the Bears selected Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The former USC standout is the Day 1 starter but they could use a QB2 behind him. The latest QB to hit the market could be an intriguing option to be Williams' backup.
Bears News: QB Jake Fromm Is Now A Free Agent
The Washington Commanders released QB Jake Fromm per their official X page. It wasn't a surprise to see Fromm be let go by Washington as they have Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota, Jeff Driskel, and undrafted rookie QB Sam Hartman on the roster.
That made Fromm disposable in May, giving him time to latch onto a new team. The 25-year-old was selected in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He's been with the Bills, New York Giants, and Commanders in his career.
Since entering the league, Fromm has been in QB rooms with the likes of Josh Allen, Daniel Jones, and Jacoby Brissett. He's watched a lot of football and could be a great resource of information in the QB room.
During his collegiate career, Fromm was a team captain at the University of Georgia. In three years as a Bulldog, he threw 8,224 passing yards with 78 passing touchdowns and 18 interceptions from 2017-2019.
Even though he wasn't been productive in the NFL, that doesn't mean he can't be a viable addition. His football IQ and knowledge of the game are what makes him valuable.
His only regular-season action came in 2021 with the Giants, where he started two games. Fromm completed 45% of his passes for 210 yards with one passing touchdown and three interceptions.
Chicago has Tyson Bagent, Austin Reed, and Brett Rypien on the roster. Fromm would be able to compete for QB2 if he was brought in.
