Chicago Bears fans don't exactly remember Marc Trestman fondly. He was an exciting hire when he was brought in, but it was quickly clear that he wasn't the answer in Chicago and he ended up overstaying his welcome.

Well on Thursday Trestman is officially back in NFL circles for the first time in seven years. The former Chicago Bears head coach is headed to the Los Angeles Chargers to join the staff as Senior Offensive Assistant Coach.

Trestman was last in the NFL in 2016 when he was the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. The 68-year-old coach then pivoted to the CFL coaching the Toronto Argonauts from 2017-2018. Shortly after, Trestman became the head coach and general manager of the Tampa Bay Vipers in 2020. During his time in the CFL, he won two Coach of the Year Awards along with three Grey Cups.

The Minnesota native was the Bears head coach from 2013-2014. Trestman is an offensive-minded guy and he had Chicago playing well on that side of the ball. In 2013, the Bears were second in the NFL in scoring (27.8). Things took a turn in 2014 when Trestman seemed to lose the locker room and was let go.

He led the Bears to a 13-19 record over the two years.

Trestman now heads to Los Angeles to another voice on the offensive side. He is just one of 11 additions that Jim Harbaugh added to round out his coaching staff.

Trestman will be in a more laid-back role which could benefit him. Being the lead man in the NFL wasn't for him but he can now just focus on aiding Justin Herbert. Trestman being away from the league for seven years could have its perks. He may see the game from a different perspective.
