Justin Fields Off to A Shaky Start in First Steelers Outing
The Chicago Bears were at the forefront of a lot of change this offseason. The biggest storyline revolved around the QB.
The Bears had Justin Fields on the roster but also owned the first overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They decided to roll with Caleb Williams and shipped out Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The excitement is through the roof over in the Windy City but things aren't looking too great for Fields in Pittsburgh. Now his first outing for the Steelers has been critiqued by a former NFL QB.
NFL News: Dan Orlovsky Gives Feedback on Justin Fields’ Play
Fields made his Steelers debut in Week 1 of the preseason against the Houston Texans on Friday night. In that contest, he didn't blow anyone away, finishing 5-of-6 for 67 passing yards. He also took two sacks for a loss of 15 yards.
Despite the stat line, former NFL quarterback Dan Orlovsky gave a film breakdown of some mistakes that Fields made.
The former Ohio State product fumbled twice when under center and Orlovsky highlighted why that happened.
On those plays, after the center snaps the ball, he drifts to the right to engage in his block but it appears that Fields doesn't move with him, leading to the fumbles.
Later in the game, Orlovsky broke down a 3rd and 13 play for the Steelers. During that play, Fields seemed to drop back too quickly and didn't allow his receivers to get downfield. He quickly dumped it off to Pat Freiermuth in the flat but he was stopped well short of the sticks.
The 40-year-old analyst breaks down that Fields needs to slow down his drop-back pace on certain plays to match the route concept. The 25-year-old has the tenacity of moving too quickly and that will hurt him on specific plays, especially on third and long.
Mike Tomlin said there is a QB competition between Fields and Russell Wilson but this wasn't a positive step forward for Fields.
