Former All-Pro Bear Earns Tryout with AFC Contender
The 2024 NFL season is rapidly approaching and teams around the league are starting to prepare. Mandatory minicamps are taking place as teams get a final tune-up before taking a break prior to training camp.
With that in mind, teams are gauging the free-agent market to see if there are any impactful players available. The New York Jets felt like they found someone and are bringing in a former Chicago Bear.
Bears News: Jakeem Grant To Workout for New York Jets
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Jakeem Grant is going to be at the New York Jets minicamp and will try out for the team.
With the NFL implementing new kickoff rules, a player like Grant has a chance to really impact the game.
It's been a tough couple of years for Grant on the injury front. Grant tore his Achilles with the Cleveland Browns in August 2022. Then, just last year, he tore his patellar tendon in the final preseason game with the Browns.
Grant isn't on the roster yet but he's attempting to make a comeback. Before the injury, the 31-year-old was a two-time All-Pro returner with the Miami Dolphins and the Chicago Bears.
He has four punt returns for touchdowns and two kickoff returns for touchdowns in his career. Grant also has a career 24.5-yard kickoff average and a 10.3-yard punt return average.
If Grant impresses in minicamp, he'll allow himself to compete for a roster spot. On May 29, the Jets signed former Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen. They now have two former Bears who were dynamic returners looking to carve out a role for the 2024 season.
