Chicago Cubs fans will get the opportunity to watch their team open up the 2025 regular season in a different country.

The Cubs are on the rise after finishing one game behind the eventual National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks for the final wild-card spot. And there’s a belief that this team should win the National League Central this season.

Cubs Rumors: Chicago to Start 2025 Season in Tokyo

USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale reported Sunday that the Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers were privately informed that they were selected to play in Tokyo to open up the 2025 regular season.

Nightingale also mentions that the Cubs, who spend Spring Training in Arizona, will return to Arizona after playing in Tokyo and continue the regular season on the West Coast before returning to the Windy City.

Next season would be the second time in the past three years Chicago would play a regular season game overseas. In the 2023 season, the Cubs played a two-game series in London against the St. Louis Cardinals.

This year, the 2024 MLB regular season began with a two-game regular season series in Seoul, South Korea, between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. Both teams also played a Spring Training and an exhibition game before facing off against each other.
