Cubs Outfielder Takes Another Step Closer Towards Return
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Cubs received great news on Tuesday as veteran slugger Cody Bellinger will be back in the starting lineup against the San Diego Padres after missing the last two weeks with a rib fracture.
However, the Cubs are still waiting for the return of Seiya Suzuki, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with an oblique injury on April 15. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported last weekend that Bellinger and Suzuki could be back with the team as soon as next week.
Cubs News: Seiya Suzuki to Begin Rehab Stint in Triple-A
On Tuesday, Cubs manager Craig Counsell gave another promising update on the 29-year-old outfielder, which should excite fans. Suzuki will be going on a rehab assignment on Wednesday with Triple-A Iowa, per Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Before Suzuki got hurt last month, the third-year outfielder was hitting .305 with three home runs and 13 RBI. Without Suzuki in the starting lineup, the Cubs have had to lean on the likes of Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alexander Canario.
Crow-Armstrong took Bellinger’s spot on the 26-man roster, where he hit .216 with two doubles, one home run, and 7 RBI. The 22-year-old Crow-Armstrong is still with the big-league club, but that could change when Suzuki is officially activated off the IL.
As for Canario, he slugged .273 with a home run, a double, two walks, and two RBI in 13 games with the Cubs. However, the Cubs optioned Canario back to Triple-A with the return of Bellinger off the injured list.
