Cubs Make Disappointing Move in Trade With AL Contender
The MLB campaign is over a month in and the Chicago Cubs have been a solid team. They are currently one of the top five teams in the National League with a 24-18 record.
Despite the Cubs finding ways to win, they clearly need to add some more talent to the bullpen. With that being a need, Chicago decided to make a move to improve that group but it was a rather unsatisfying one.
Cubs News: Chicago Traded For RHP Tyson Miller
The Chicago Cubs traded minor-league infielder Jake Slaughter for RHP Tyson Miller from the Seattle Mariners. They created space on the 40-man roster by designating LHP Richard Lovelady for assignment.
It's a reunion for Miller, as he was drafted by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
The 28-year-old was scooped up on waivers by the Texas Rangers in 2021, starting his run around the league over the past few years. Miller played for the Cubs, Rangers, Milwaukee Brewers, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, and the Seattle Mariners.
Rolling into 2024, Miller got a non-roster deal with the Mariners and eventually got called up to the active roster early in the regular season.
He appeared in nine outings this season, logging 11.2 innings with 12 strikeouts and a 3.09 ERA. Miller isn't a game changer for the Cubs but he does provide them with another arm in the pen.
Chicago is currently 24th in the MLB in team bullpen ERA (4.61). The biggest problem is the walk rate (11%).
To really be taken seriously, the Cubs still need to find ways to improve the bullpen.
