The Chicago Sky have the opportunity to land potentially two franchise players in Monday’s 2024 WNBA Draft.

The Sky finished the 2023 regular season with an 18-22 record and made the playoffs for the fifth straight season. Chicago hopes to keep that playoff streak alive with Teresa Weatherspoon, who was named the franchise’s new head coach in October.

The Sky made a major move ahead of Monday’s draft, swapping spots with the Minnesota Lynx in the first round on Sunday. Chicago acquired the No. 7 pick, Nikolina Milic from Minnesota for the No. 8 pick, Sika Kone, a 2025 second-round pick, and the rights to swap 2026 first-round picks.

Chicago also has the No. 3 overall pick in the first round, which gives them the chance to take either Rickea Jackson or Kamilla Cardoso. However, regarding the seventh overall pick, the Sky could draft one of the more decorated players in women’s college basketball in Angel Reese.

In his latest mock draft posted earlier this week, Michael Voepel had Chicago take Reese with the No. 8 pick. On paper, the idea of pairing Reese with Cardoso is intriguing as the Sky could solidify their frontcourt for years to come.

With the Sky moving up to the seventh overall pick, the dream of taking Reese becomes more likely as Chicago only has to worry about the Dallas Wings (No. 5) and Washington Mystics (No. 6).

The Wings could decide to take Aaliyah Edwards at No. 5 overall. However, if Dallas goes in a different direction at No. 5, then Edwards to the Mystics at No. 6 makes a lot of sense. If that scenario plays out, then Reese falls into the lap of Sky.

Reese was a double-double machine at LSU, averaging 20.9 points and 14.4 rebounds per game in her last two years in Baton Rouge, LA. Reese’s rebounding is top-tier and will translate immediately to the pro game.

However, some analysts question Reese’s offensive game as she has to add more to become a more complete player. The good news for her is that she’ll be on a team loaded with vets, who have been there and done that.

The Sky are considered long shots to win the WNBA title (+10000 on FanDuel Sportsbook) but that shouldn’t deter Chicago from adding Reese, who could become a star in the league.
