Bears Star Kicked Out of Practice for Endangering Caleb Williams
By Jovan Alford
There’s a lot of excitement surrounding the Chicago Bears this year as they have a revamped offense led by first-overall pick Caleb Williams. Williams is the new starting quarterback in the Windy City after the team sent Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Williams enters the NFL with a ton of fanfare and expectations based on what he did in his two years at USC and what the Bears added in the offseason.
However, before Williams can look ahead to the regular season, he has to go through the rigors of training camp. The former USC star quarterback has made a few wow plays in training camp, which has caught the attention of fans on social media.
But at Saturday’s practice, Bears star pass rusher Montez Sweat made life tough for Williams and ended up being kicked out of practice for swatting the ball out of the young QB’s hand.
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Sweat swatted the ball out of Williams’ hand during a two-minute drill, making the the second consecutive practice he did that. Bears head coach Matt Eberflus took notice and talked to Sweat about the incident.
"He knows he should not do that," Eberflus said. I threw him out of that drill today. Then I pulled him aside and I said, ‘Look, you cannot do that. You’d be sick if something happens, OK?’ He understands that. And does he get around the edge fast and all that stuff? Yeah, he does. But he’s a superior, elite athlete. He’s good enough to be able to stop and move away. So he has to be disciplined that way."
Thankfully, Williams didn’t get hurt as anytime a pass rusher goes to swipe at the ball in the QB’s hand, it could lead to injury by mistake. Eberflus took the right approach with Sweat as he should know how to pull up in practice, but as the head coach put it – he gets around the edge fast.
The Bears can ill-afford for Williams to get hurt in training camp or the preseason as he’s their franchise quarterback. There’s a contingent of people who believe the Bears can punch their ticket to the postseason if Williams is the guy we saw over the last two years in college.
However, Williams has to continue to prove himself at camp and in the preseason as all eyes will be on him.
