Bears Moving on From Veteran Right Before Week 1 Game
By Jovan Alford
The Chicago Bears are preparing for their home opener on Sunday when they will face the Tennessee Titans to kick off the 2024 NFL season.
However, before the Bears take the field on Sunday, they are still making small roster moves. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears reached an injury settlement with veteran wide receiver Dante Pettis.
The veteran receiver was one of three players released ahead of last week’s roster cutdown deadline and placed on injured reserve. However, Pettis wasn’t given the designation to return as that went to offensive lineman Larry Borom and defensive lineman Jacob Martin.
Pettis made a solid impression in the preseason to make the Bears’ 53-man roster as he scored two touchdowns against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, it wasn’t enough as Chicago decided to keep six receivers on the 53-man roster.
The former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver originally joined the Bears in 2022 after playing with the New York Giants the previous season. In 2022, Pettis had 19 receptions (41 targets) for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
He also saw some time on special teams, returning 18 punts. The former second-round pick re-signed with Chicago the next offseason but was placed on injured reserve during training camp and ultimately waived.
Pettis will look to get healthy and land a tryout over the next few weeks to get a spot on another team’s practice squad. If the Bears suffer an injury this season at receiver, one has to wonder if they would bring back Pettis.
