When David Montgomery left the Bears in 2023, it set off a small chain reaction. He signed with the Detroit Lions who then traded D'Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2023 NFL Draft.

Swift had his best campaign as a pro, going for 1,049 yards with five touchdowns. He continued to be a solid receiving option, picking up 214 yards and a touchdown on 39 catches. The Eagles didn't re-sign him in free agency, instead going with Saquan Barkley, and Swift landed in Chicago.

The Bears were in the market for a new running back after giving Khalil Herbert a shot at the job when Montgomery first left. Coming off a 731-yard campaign in 2022, hopes were high for Herbert.

Overall, Herbert did well when he was on the field with 611 yards and an average of 4.6 per attempt. But he struggled with durability, missing five games and portions of others.

Now, Herbert finds himself in a tough spot. He's behind Swift, which wouldn't be terrible, but the performance of Roschon Johnson during his rookie season has put him firmly on the bubble.

Johnson, who was stuck behind Bijan Robinson at Texas, is an impressive 6-foot and 225 pounds. He ran for 352 yards and caught another 209 yards while scoring twice. He's expected to have a larger role, which could lead to Herbert being traded.

In the end, that might be the best thing for him. Landing with a running back-needy team could get his career back on track.
