6 Bears Who Won't Survive the Preseason
5. Velus Jones Jr., WR/RB/KR
The Chicago Bears are getting a new look at former third-round pick Velus Jones Jr., who had a strong overall performance against the Buffalo Bills in this preseason game.
Jones showed off his skills as a potential convert to the running back position, scoring a touchdown from a relatively short distance and showing off his explosiveness as an offensive weapon. That's the reason the Bears fell in love with him in the first place.
Unfortunately, other aspects of his game will have to be accounted for if Jones is going to make the Bears' roster this coming season, including a couple of plays that can't be ignored. First, Jones fumbled on his lone kickoff return, which obviously can't be tolerated for someone whose primary role on the team might be in the kick return game.
Second, Jones stumbled in the backfield on one of his rushing attempts and isn't a finished product at the running back position by any stretch.
Still, the talent is tough to ignore. Perhaps the emergence of someone like Jones could end up pushing Khalil Herbert off the roster. The Bears have enough options at receiver right now that it doesn't seem like Jones will do much in that department absent an injury to someone else. But he could have a role as a reserve running back and return specialist.
But the little mistakes that he can avoid have to be avoided at all costs.
