6 Bears Who Could Be Cut Prior to Training Camp
The 2024 season marks a brand-new era for the Chicago Bears with the arrival of quarterback Caleb Williams, the #1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The arrival of Williams has brought the highest expectations for the Bears we've seen in quite some time.
General manager Ryan Poles has been building up this roster for the last handful of years in anticipation of finally hitting on a franchise quarterback, and as a result, the Bears don't have the look of a team that is typically drafting first overall. This roster is pretty good, and people in the NFL world expect them to make a leap in the 2024 season.
Who is in danger of getting phased out of the plan before training camp even kicks off, though? Even as teams are allowed to keep 90 players at this point in the offseason, there are guys who might not make sense to stick around much longer, maybe even not until camp. Let's take a look at a few players who could potentially be cut before camp starts.
6 Chicago Bears Players That Could Be Cut Before Training Camp in 2024
1. Austin Reed, quarterback
There are a couple of factors at play here. The Bears have four quarterbacks on the roster right now and in some cases, that can work. Having four quarterbacks on the roster doesn't always work out for teams, but in the offseason, it can make sense depending on the circumstances. For the Chicago Bears, it really doesn't make much sense.
Unless the Bears feel like Austin Reed or Brett Rypien can surpass Tyson Bagent as the team's QB2, it makes little to no sense for them to have all of those guys on the roster right now. The primary reason it makes no sense is because every rep the fourth quarterback gets could be a rep stolen from Caleb Williams. There's no need to sacrifice Williams's reps just so you can carry four quarterbacks. One of Austin Reed or Brett Rypien probably needs to go before camp.
