6 Bears Who Could Be Cut Before Playing a Snap
By Randy Gurzi
1. Austin Reed, Quarterback
Caleb Williams is the focal point at quarterback for the Chicago Bears and it appears Tyson Bagent has the No. 2 spot locked up. While both have the talent, they don't have much experience in the NFL, which is why free-agent addition Brett Rypien has the inside track for the QB3 spot.
Rypien might have only appeared in 10 games with four starts but he's been in the NFL for four seasons and has worked with some brilliant coaches including Sean Payton with the Denver Broncos and Sean McVay last year with the Los Angeles Rams.
Even with that being the case, Austin Reed was seen as a threat to take his job. Undrafted out of Western Kentucky, Reed brought a little excitement with him — and it was a surprise to see him go the entire draft without hearing his name called.
Heading into their preseason debut, the news surrounding Reed seemed non-existent. Naturally, all eyes have been on the No. 1 overall pick but there still should have been something regarding Reed. That won't change much after Thursday's opener.
Reed hardly saw the field, only coming into the game in the fourth quarter. He was able to throw two passes and while both were completed, he managed just 10 yards. Rypien, on the other hand, had a fantastic outing.
The veteran backup was 11-of-15 for 166 yards with three touchdowns and no picks. His performance does have an asterisk since it was primarily against players who won't be on the roster in Week 1 but that's what experienced players are supposed to do in that position. There's a long way to go before final cuts but it seems as though the QB depth chart is finalized in Chicago.
