6 Bears Who Could Be Cut Before Playing a Snap
By Randy Gurzi
3. Jamree Kromah, EDGE
The Bears don't have a lot of great options when it comes to rushing the passer. Their best option remains Montez Sweat, who was added on Halloween in 2023 in a trade with the Washington Commanders. In nine games with Chicago, he recorded six sacks, batted down three passes, and had one forced fumble.
Seen as the building block of their D-line, Sweat was signed to a four-year contract extension worth $98 million — $72 million of which is guaranteed. Outside of their massive investment in Sweat, the Bears haven't done enough.
Their primary options across from him are Dominique Robinson and DeMarcus Walker. They also signed Jacob Martin and while all three could be seen as decent reserves, they're not ideal starters. That's why there continue to be calls for Yannick Ngakoue to return.
Chicago hasn't brought him back and they have yet to kick the tires on any remaining free agents — such as Carl Lawson. Perhaps that will change if they continue to see a lack of progress from their current defensive ends.
If that does happen, it likely spells the end for Jamree Kromah. An undrafted free agent who played for Rutgers from 2018 through 2021 and then James Madison in 2022 and 2023, Kromah boasts an impressive frame at 6-foot-3 and 271 pounds. Still, he's a developmental product and the Bears need players who can contribute now.
Perhaps he makes sense as a practice squad candidate but before that can happen, he would have to be subjected to waivers.
