6 Bears on the Roster Bubble Heading Into Preseason Finale
By Randy Gurzi
3. Brett Rypien, Quarterback
Caleb Williams is the future of the quarterback position in Chicago. Even though he was just 6-of-13 for 75 yards through the air, Williams made enough plays on Saturday to get fans excited. He even added a seven-yard touchdown run for good measure.
When he left the field, it was second-year signal-caller Tyson Bagent who took over. He was impressive, going 7-of-8 for 87 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He also had one rushing attempt for 10 yards.
Third in the game was Brett Rypien. He threw just four passes, completing three of them for 53 yards. Despite looking solid, there's a chance he could be in danger of not making the team.
Bagent clearly has the No. 2 spot locked down, meaning Rypien's path to the roster will be as the QB3. Perhaps the Bears will be fine with that but they might prefer to keep undrafted rookie Austin Reed. They might also be willing to go with just two quarterbacks while adding Reed to the practice squad - assuming he doesn't get claimed on waivers.
Rypien was also an undrafted free agent, signed by the Denver Broncos in 2019. He's the nephew of former Super Bowl-winning QB Mark Rypien. He played in Denver for four years but was with three different teams in 2023 (the Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and the New York Jets). There's something to be said for having a veteran quarterback on the roster but Rypien isn't exactly a tenured starter that Williams will be able to lean on. That's why it wouldn't be a shock to see Chicago stick with youth this year.
