6 Bears on the Trade Block Heading Into Training Camp
4. Jacob Martin, EDGE/special teams
Over the last handful of years, Jacob Martin has been a very valuable asset for teams both as a special teams ace as well as a reserve off the edge. Since he was taken in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, Martin has at least two sacks every year he's been in the league.
He's spent time with Seattle, the New York Jets, the Denver Broncos, and last year with the Indianapolis Colts.
When you talk about value at the bottom of your roster, Martin provides exactly that. And the Chicago Bears would likely be quite pleased to have him on the roster this coming season because of his reliability on special teams where he's played at least 120 snaps in four of his six NFL seasons.
There's no doubt about Martin's overall value as a special teams ace and rotational pass rusher where he provides energy and intensity, but do the Chicago Bears have enough room on their roster for that right now? That's a fair question to ask with Montez Sweat leading the way and DeMarcus Walker, Dominique Robinson, Khalid Kareem, and rookie Austin Booker factoring into the mix.
The Bears don't currently have a true logjam off the edge that would seemingly prevent Martin from making the team, but what if some of the young players prove themselves to be uncuttable over the course of training camp and the preseason? Someone like Jacob Martin carries too much value to just cut, and teams around the league would have immediate interest if the Bears would let him go.
There's no doubt the Bears could trade him for a late-round pick or, at the very least, a late-round pick swap.
