3 White Sox Playing Their Final Season in Chicago in 2024
By Jovan Alford
3. Michael Kopech
Chicago hoped Kopech would be one of their starters this season, but they decided to put him back in the bullpen.
The 27-year-old pitcher struggled mightily as a starter in 2023, posting a 5-12 record and 5.43 ERA in 30 appearances (27 starts). The White Sox moved Kopech to the bullpen late last year for a few starts but didn’t perform well (20.25 ERA, six earned runs allowed in 2.2 IP).
Kopech hasn’t had the best Spring Training either, posting an ERA of 6.00 in five appearances (three starts). The right-handed pitcher recorded 11 strikeouts in nine innings of work but also allowed seven runs (six earned runs), seven walks, and two home runs.
Unlike Jimenez and Moncada, the White Sox won’t feel the need to move Kopech at the trade deadline as he won’t reach free agency until 2026.
However, if the veteran reliever can show improvement from his down performance in 2023, there will be interest at the deadline for a relief pitcher who can get strikeouts.
