3 More Roster Moves the Bears Should Make Before the NFL Draft
By Randy Gurzi
1. Sign a Veteran QB
Chicago moved on from Justin Fields this offseason, sending him to the Pittsburgh Steelers for practically nothing. While he was starting to figure things out last year, there were still too many concerns for them to justify skipping out on Caleb Williams.
What's unfortunate for Fields is that Williams is going to join a team with far more weapons than the Ohio State QB ever had. D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, Cole Kmet, and D'Andre Swift will keep Williams from having to do all of the heavy lifting early in his career. That should lead to more success than they've seen from any other young quarterback the Bears have tried recently.
What they don't have, however, is a veteran quarterback Williams can lean on — or can take the reins if Williams were to miss time.
Right now, Tyson Bagnet is the No. 2 option and while he was a good story in 2023, he's not someone they want to continue to lean on in a pinch.
There are a few options out there including Brian Hoyer, Ryan Tannehill, Blaine Gabbert, and Carson Wentz. None move the needle much but they would all be preferable to Bagnet — even if their only job is to give Williams an experienced player to work with.
