3 Last-Minute Signings the Bears Can Make At Start of Training Camp
By Randy Gurzi
1. Emmanuel Ogbah, EDGE
If there was only one position we could add to Chicago, it would have to be the edge. While they have a building block in Montez Sweat, they really don't have much else beyond that.
DeMarcus Walker is slated to be the starter across from Sweat and while he has plenty of experience, he put up just 3.5 sacks in 2023. Dominique Robinson is behind him and has two sacks in two seasons. There's also Jacob Martin, a journeyman with 85 tackles and 18 sacks in six seasons.
The Bears could bring back Yannick Ngakoue, who was with them in 2023 before suffering a broken ankle in Week 14. But they could also look to an outside free agency such as Emmanuel Ogbah.
A second-round pick in 2016 out of Michigan State, Ogbah had 12.5 sacks in his first three seasons for the Cleveland Browns. He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019 when the Browns added Olivier Vernon and Ogbah had 5.5 sacks in 10 games before suffering a torn ACL. He still got a Super Bowl ring and then signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.
Ogbah broke out with Miami and had 18 sacks in two seasons before signing a four-year extension in 2022. He was released two years into the deal and is still looking for a place to play in 2024. Always an underrated player, Ogbah would be a solid No. 2 EDGE across from Sweat and wouldn't break the bank at this point in his career.
