3 Free Agents Bears Must Sign if They're Sticking With Justin Fields
By Randy Gurzi
As long as Justin Fields remains on the roster, there's an outside chance the Chicago Bears stick with him in 2024. Taking Caleb Williams first overall is the most likely scenario, without a doubt, but the question keeps getting asked — will they trade the first pick?
If they did this, they would be opening themselves up for a lot of scrutiny if it fails. That's why they would have to do everything they could to build up their roster and ensure they don't wind up regretting the move. With that being the case, here are three signings they have to make if they plan on keeping Justin Fields.
3. Kevin Zeitler, G
This past season, the Bears signed Nate Davis away from the Tennessee Titans and he struggled at right guard. He started 11 games and PFF graded him at just 52.9 overall with a pass-blocking score of 47.9 and 55.3 for run blocking.
He clearly wasn't the player they thought they were getting when signing him to a three-year, $30 million deal. That's why it would be a wise move to target a replacement such as Kevin Zeitler.
A Pro Bowl selection in 2023, the 34-year-old Zeitler spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. He was also with the New York Giants before that and spent time with the Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals. With 181 career starts, he brings a wealth of experience and was an excellent run blocker in 2023. Adding him should make any quarterback feel safer in the pocket.
