3 Former Bears Still Unemployed Entering Week 2
2. Tommy Sweeney, TE
The Bears attempted to add to their tight end depth when they signed Tommy Sweeney to a one-year contract during the offseason. The veteran pass-catcher was looking to make a comeback after missing the entire 2023 season due to what was described as a 'medical event.'
The 6-foot-5 TE's run with the Bears didn't last long, though. Sweeney didn't even play a single preseason game in a Chicago uniform as the franchise opted to release him ahead of the 53-man roster deadline. Considering how he couldn't steal any playing time away from Cole Kmet and Gerald Everett, it's safe to say that the 29-year-old's best days could be behind him.
After all, Sweeney was never an offensive force, having only turned 18 receptions into 165 receiving yards and a touchdown in 24 career games. That's without mentioning how he struggled to protect Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen when he last played, finishing the 2022 campaign with a putrid 21.4 pass block grade, per Pro Football Focus.
It's possible that Sweeney may never be the same following last year's medical issues. If that's the case and his playing opportunities remain limited, he could consider hanging up the cleats sooner rather than later.
