3 Chicago Bears on Thin Ice Following OTAs
2. Khalil Herbert, RB
Because of all the other high-profile moves the Chicago Bears have made this offseason, one of the easiest to overlook is the addition of veteran running back D'Andre Swift. Swift hasn't exactly lived up to his billing as a high second-round pick, but he is coming off of one of the best years of his NFL career so far -- statistically speaking -- and gives the Bears a new clear-cut RB1 heading into their offseason program.
The Bears also added Roschon Johnson in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Texas, and he looked pretty good as a rookie last year.
Where does the presence of both Swift and Johnson leave someone like Khalil Herbert, who has been with the Bears since 2021?
Herbert is now entering a contract year with the Bears and is coming off of two pretty solid years as one of the Bears' leading rushers behind quarterback Justin Fields.
Even if it's not with the Chicago Bears, Khalil Herbert is going to make someone's roster in 2024, but he might not have a clear shot at carries in Chicago barring injury. The Bears might be "doing right" by Herbert to get him to another situation elsewhere in the league that could help him get to a more lucrative second contract. The battle for RB2 will heat up as the offseason progresses for Chicago.
