3 Chicago Bears on Thin Ice Following OTAs
The Chicago Bears are one of the most exciting teams in the NFL this offseason thanks to the addition of Caleb Williams with the top overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft as well as the additions of receivers Keenan Allen and Rome Odunze. As exciting as the Chicago Bears are on paper, one of the ugly realities of upgrading your roster is having to demote or even cut good players.
The Bears, just like every NFL team, are entering the mandatory minicamp phase of offseason activities soon, and there are a number of players who could be on thin ice.
But who? Let's take a look at some players that need to step up the remainder of the offseason.
1. Brett Rypien, QB
The Bears made a veteran addition to their very young quarterback room this offseason, signing former Denver Broncos backup Brett Rypien. Rypien has spent time the last couple of years with the likes of the Rams and Jets, but his value to a quarterback room these days seems to be less about what he does on the field and more of how he helps the quarterback room off the field.
Rypien is a valuable extra set of eyes, but contrasting him with guys like Caleb Williams and even Tyson Bagent on the practice field is going to be pretty staggering for most to see. If the Bears are to keep three quarterbacks on the roster, Rypien will have competition from one of the best undrafted free agent signings made by any team this offseason -- former Western Kentucky QB Austin Reed.
