3 Bears Veterans Who Will Be Cut Following the NFL Draft
2. Larry Borom, OT
Protecting your franchise quarterback is paramount to NFL success, which is why the Bears should consider ridding themselves of offensive tackle Larry Borom.
After being a somewhat decent blocker in his first two campaigns, Borom took a massive step back during the 2023 season. The former 2021 fifth-rounder finished his third season as Pro Football Focus' eighth-worst graded tackle after surrendering 16 hurries, six QB hits, and three sacks while playing 225 passing downs.
For reference, he allowed only 14 total pressures in 2022 despite playing 39 more passing snaps compared to last year.
Borom's quest to remain on the roster was only made harder when the Bears drafted Yale's Kiran Amegadjie with the draft's 75th overall pick. That's without mentioning how Darnell Wright and Braxton Jones are already locked into the starting spots while Jake Curhan and Aviante Collins should also provide some competition.
Even though the Bears already have about $23.2 million in remaining cap space, more room can be created by moving on from the underperforming blocker. Whether it's before or after June 1, Chicago can free up a whopping $3.1 million by giving Borom the axe.
Given that addition by subtraction is a real concept, I won't be surprised if general manager Ryan Poles opts to cut Borom, whom he didn't even draft in the first place.
