3 Bears on Thin Ice Heading Into Week 2
By Randy Gurzi
The Chicago Bears are 1-0 and in the standings, that's all that matters.
Even so, they know they were lucky to escape the opener with a win. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams said as much after the game when he was asked to give his opinion on the victory. Williams, who had 93 yards on 14-of-29 passing, praised his defense and special teams for pulling off the win before saying he expects more from himself.
He put that pressure on his shoulders, which is what good leaders do. In all honesty though, he was far from the only player who could have done better.
With that being said, here's a look at three Bears who are on thin ice heading into Week 2.
3. Coleman Shelton, C
In need of better play at center, the Bears brought in Coleman Shelton and Ryan Bates this offseason to battle for the starting job. Shelton ended up winning the spot, due in large part to an injury that slowed Bates, and he made his first start on Sunday.
The former L.A. Rams' starter didn't live up to expectations against the Titans. He was hit with a costly holding penalty and was credited with two sacks and another pressure.
With 32 career starts at center, there's no reason to think he can't turn it around. And if there was anything positive to take into the second game, it would be that there were no bad exchanges between Shelton and Williams. That means if he can clean up the pass protection, things can improve. If not, they might be considering other options soon.
