3 Bears On Thin Ice Entering Week 4
3. Bears Offensive Line
We've got to put the entire Bears offensive line on thin ice this week because all of these guys were apparently on skates against the Indianapolis Colts anyway.
On the one hand, it's easy to look at a couple of numbers like D'Andre Swift's 1.8 yards per carry and the fact that Caleb Williams has been sacked a whopping 13 times in three games and pin those numbers on those players. And they do bear some of the responsibility (pun fully intended).
But let's take a look at this play right here in the tight red zone where dang-near the entire Chicago Bears offensive line ends up on the ground on a simple pitch play to the running back.
This is just unacceptable, but I'm not 100 percent sure what the Bears are supposed to do about it. Do you throw Kiran Amegadjie into the starting lineup? Do you really have the depth on the offensive line to make personnel changes?
Is this a coaching issue?
Whatever the Bears decide to do, this is not sustainable with a rookie quarterback under center. It's not sustainable with prime Peyton Manning under center. This is something that Ryan Poles -- a former offensive lineman himself -- needs to get figured out quickly.
Poles, while he's been waiting to commit to a QB1 for his roster, has had plenty of time to build and invest in the offensive line. The Bears have been super aggressive under Poles in pursuing trades that might be out there, and this is a situation where Poles might have to pull a rabbit out of his hat. How many quality offensive linemen hit the trade block year after year...during the season?
Not many. But there's got to be something done about this as Chicago's offensive line has been a laughing stock as of late.
