3 Bears Most Likely to Be Traded Before Roster Cutdown Day

1. Khalil Herbert, RB

When David Montgomery left in free agency ahead of the 2023 season, it opened the door for Khalil Herbert to be the starter in Chicago. He was fresh off his best campaign as a pro, gaining 731 yards and four touchdowns. He also had an impressive average of 5.7 yards per attempt.

Herbert played well when he was on the field in 2023 but he struggled with durability. He missed five full games and parts of a couple more. He still had an average of 4.6 yards per attempt but recorded just 611 with two touchdowns. The bright spot was his 20 receptions for 134 yards, which were a personal best.

Still, Chicago felt they needed to upgrade the position this year, which is exactly what they did when they signed D'Andre Swift to a three-year deal worth $24 million. Swift started his career with the Detroit Lions but was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles when Montgomery headed to Detroit. He had his first career 1,000-yard campaign and quickly cashed in.

Behind him, the Bears have some other options as well. One is Roschon Johnson, who was impressive as a rookie and offers a 225-pound powerful frame. Travis Homer and Ian Wheeler round things out and while neither is as talented as Herbert, the Bears are unlikely to use their RB3 often unless there's an injury.

Perhaps they stick with the deep stable of backs considering the health issues they had in 2023. But they could also look to trade Herbert to a team in need of a running back. Especially with him entering the final year of his rookie deal.
