11 Bears Who Will Be Cut By Tuesday's Roster Deadline
7. Cameron Lyons, Long Snapper
You can be forgiven for not closely following the Bears' long snapper situation throughout training camp, but there are currently two on the roster: Patrick Scales and Cameron Lyons.
Lyons was first waived back on August 3rd, but he returned with Scales missing some time due to injury. There haven't been any concrete updates on Scales' health (it's like the beat reporters don't think people want blow-by-blow updates on a long snapper's health? go figure), but there haven't been any indications that it's anything serious.
With Lyons already waived once (not to mention an errant snap in one of his few preseason opportunities), it's clear that he's just here to fill in while Scales is hurt. The job is Scales', just like it has been for the last 120 games since he took over back in 2015.
Even if Scales isn't ready for Week 1, look for the Bears to try to find a solution that doesn't involve carrying two long snappers on their 53-man roster. Perhaps Lyons ends up on the practice squad and the team uses an activation or two (allowing them to play him without elevating him to the 53-man roster).
Even that doesn't seem like a good answer though. Lyons, for those keeping score at home, has the fourth-worst long snapping grade among 39 long snappers that PFF graded during the preseason so far.
