11 Bears Who Will Be Cut By Tuesday's Roster Deadline
5. Corliss Waitman, Punter
Well, when it comes to the players who are definitely going to get cut before Tuesday, you unfortunately have to look at some of the low-hanging fruit.
The Bears used a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on Iowa punter Tory Taylor, and Taylor has been everything they expected and more. While he was at Iowa, it almost became a sad joke how much of an asset to the Iowa offense Tory Taylor became. His ability to pin teams so deep in their own territory helped Iowa's defense get a lot of stops, creating short field after short field for the offense.
Taylor, in many ways, was the best player on Iowa's offense during his time with the Hawkeyes.
With Caleb Williams and a star-studded cast of receivers, the Bears hope they don't have to use Tory Taylor for more than holding on field goals, but when they do need a punter, it's going to be Tory Taylor out there and not Corliss Waitman.
Waitman has NFL punting experience and was once the full-time punter of the Denver Broncos, and the Bears also showcased him in their final preseason game against the Chiefs. We see kickers traded plenty in the NFL these days, but I'm not sure Waitman is going to have developed enough of a market to generate trade interest.
More likely, he's going to get cut and potentially end up being one of the top overall punters available on the market. He averaged 44.3 yards per punt against the Chiefs and could upgrade some team's special teams core.
