11 Bears Who Will Be Cut By Tuesday's Roster Deadline
3. Dante Pettis, Wide Receiver
Making the Chicago Bears' roster at the wide receiver position got astronomically harder this past offseason.
Of course, the Bears made the trade for Chargers veteran Keenan Allen, who has come into the news lately for apparently his alleged weight gain. Regardless, Allen is slated to play a huge role in the offense this season alongside fellow veteran receiver DJ Moore, who has been paid and anointed the clear WR1 in Chicago for rookie QB Caleb Williams.
The Bears obviously have a potential superstar in the making in 2024 first-round pick Rome Odunze, the 9th overall pick in this year's draft who has been sensational since stepping foot into Halas Hall.
But the guys at the top are one thing. What about the competition for bottom-of-the-roster players is going to keep Dante Pettis Jr. off this team?
It starts with Tyler Scott, who was featured in the Bears' final preseason game. And I think we saw enough from Scott with six receptions for 99 yards as well as a 17-yard end-around and 49 yards on a pair of kickoff returns.
Behind Scott, the Bears have veteran DeAndre Carter out there competing for a role. Is Carter worth keeping over Dante Pettis at this point? In terms of the kickoff return and punt return phases of the game, it does seem Carter has an edge over Pettis at this point both offensively and on special teams. A fumble against the Chiefs could potentially hurt Carter's overall chances but he seems to be favored right now.
With Velus Jones likely limiting the Bears to just five other receivers on the roster, it feels like Pettis is currently the odd man out.
